Michael Georgieff, MD - Early Nutrition and the Brain: Should we be concerned? Dr. Michael K. Georgieff is the Martin Lenz Harrison Land Grant Professor of Pediatrics and Child Psychology at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Georgieff is one of the world’s experts on the role of nutrients in brain development. Specifically, he studies the effect of fetal and neonatal iron deficiency on the developing the hippocampus, which underlies recognition learning and memory processing.
John Colombo, Ph. D - LCPUFA Supplemental and Developmental Outcomes Dr. John Colombo is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies at the University of Kansas. He has established and maintained a research program on cognitive development in infancy and early childhood at Kansas that has long emphasized the role of individual differences and environment-organism interactions in development since the 1980's. His primary interests are in early cognitive development and the developmental cognitive neuroscience of attention.
Martha Neuringer, Ph. D - Nutrients for the Developing Eye and Brain: Insights from Monkey Models Dr. Martha Neuringer is a Senior Scientist in the Division of Neuroscience at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC), and Research Associate Professor in Ophthalmology and Clinical Nutrition, at Oregon Health and Science University. Her work has explored the roles of nutrients including omega-3 fatty acids, taurine and carotenoids on the development and aging of the retina and brain, primarily in nonhuman primate models. Other research directions include nonhuman primate models of cognitive aging and of retinal diseases including age-related macular degeneration.
